Itinerary

Day 1 Tuesday Arrival in Oslo

Transfer from the airport to the hotel. In the afternoon, tour the vibrant capital of Norway. Stop at the Holmenkollen Olympic Ski Jump, offering breathtaking vistas of the city below. Continue with a walk through the Vigeland Sculpture Park. Next, drive past the Royal Palace, Parliament and the City Hall, where the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded and on to the Harbor front with great views of the impression new Opera House. Oslo today is indeed enjoying the eclectic mixture of historic and modern areas. Continue to the Hotel, located in the heart of in Oslo. Continental Hotel.

Day 2 Wednesday Oslo

The Jewish community in Norway has historically always been small, but it is not insignificant: Jews have been a part of Oslo’s society for centuries. Visit the Jewish cemetery and its Holocaust monument. Continue to the modest but worthy Jewish Museum and the Oslo Synagogue, which survived the Holocaust. Next, continue to the old fortification of Oslo for a tour of the Norwegian Resistance Museum. Enjoy the afternoon at leisure to explore Oslo on your own. Continental Hotel.

Day 3 Thursday Oslo – Stalheim

This morning, drive to the town of Honefoss, board an Express Train, and journey through gentle, forested valleys and across the glacial area of Hardanger. The views are stunning. At Myrdal, change to the famous Flam Railway. This feat of engineering allows a spectacular descent from the snow-capped mountains to the inner reaches of the Sognefjord. Upon arrival in Flam, continue on a breathtaking Fjord Cruise. Drift past roaring waterfalls, with snowcapped mountains as a backdrop, to the end of the Naeroy Fjord. Next, enjoy a short, scenic drive up the mountain to the renowned Stalheim Hotel. This Nordic oasis offers soul-filling vistas of the surrounding mountains and valley below. Dinner. Stalheim Hotel.

Day 4 Friday Stalheim – Bergen

Wake up and enjoy the peaceful sounds of roaring waterfalls and whispering white birches. Depart Stalheim by coach for another special adventure in the land of trolls, fjords, and mountains. Drive to Voss, the small but most central town in the region. From here, continue along the shores of the Hardanger Fjord, second longest in Norway, passing gently rolling hills and fruit orchards in between charming little towns. Next, cross the rugged landscape and drive towards the serenely beautiful Solstrand Hotel, located on the Bjoernefjord. Check-in at the hotel and enjoy the remainder of the day in this delightful setting. Dinner. Solstrand Hotel.

Day 5 Saturday Bergen

This morning, enjoy a scenic drive to Bergen. This city played an important part in the cultural life of Norway, and is intimately linked to artists such as Henrik Ibsen and Edvard Grieg, whose former home and Museum you will visit. Next, approach the historic city and its traditional harbor market, formerly the Fish Market (where you will still see and smell fish!), but today featuring a dazzling variety of products. Walk among the former Hanseatic Counting Houses (Bryggen), listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, telling of Bergen’s past importance as a trading town. After the tour, enjoy time at leisure to further explore this unique city. Later in the afternoon, return to the tranquility and peace of your hotel. Dinner. Solstrand Hotel.

Day 6 Sunday Bergen – Copenhagen

Transfer to Bergen Airport and check-in for the flight to Copenhagen. Upon arrival in Copenhagen, visit Dragoer, where many Danish Jews, aided by their fellow Danes, embarked across the water to Sweden. Continue to Copenhagen, where you will soon feel welcome in this charming and picturesque (not to mention “wonderful”) Danish capital, with its centuries-old houses and quaint canals. Tour Castle Island and the Danish Parliament, and visit the Jewish Museum, prominently placed beside to the Royal Danish Library. Walk past the former Stock Exchange and Naval Church, both dating back to the 17th century. Continue by coach via the Nyhavn Canal, a picturesque city landmark, to Amalienborg Palace, the official residence of the Danish Royal Family, and on to Hans Christian Andersen’s wistful Little Mermaid, perhaps the most famous national symbol of Denmark. Later, drive past Rosenborg Castle and the Town Hall Square to your hotel, situated next to the enchanting, fairy-lit Tivoli Gardens. Radisson Royal Collection Hotel.

Day 7 Monday Copenhagen

Today, follow one of the rescue routes taken by the Danish Jews in October 1943. Drive north along the coast towards Elsinore; its castle is the famous setting for Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Here is the narrowest point between Denmark and Sweden. Rescue vessels, camouflaged as fishing boats, departed north, south, and west of the town, where guards held less control. After a walk on the ramparts of the Kronborg Castle, continue to Hornbaek, a favorite beach-side vacation spot for the Copenhagen Jewish community — and still home to a wonderful little kosher hotel! Continue to Gilleleje, one of the main gathering points for Jews on their way to safety in Sweden. Here, a tragedy unfolded as hundreds of Jews and Resistance fighters were hidden in the parish church. Their hiding place was revealed to the Germans, and 100 Jews were captured. Despite this tragic setback, Gilleleje continued to play an important role in both rescue and resistance. From here, drive back to Copenhagen via the forested route, passing the beautiful Renaissance Castle of Frederiksborg. Arrive in Copenhagen in the late afternoon. Radisson Collection Royal Hotel.

Day 8 Tuesday Copenhagen

After a short drive, arrive in the Latin Quarter for a visit to the Great Synagogue of Copenhagen. Admire the adjacent Round Tower (with large, golden letters meant to be Hebrew). Next, visit the Danish Resistance Museum, which includes a section highlighting the miraculous rescue of the Danish Jews. To cap of the day, visit the Danish Design Museum, showcasing the clean, streamlined aesthetic (“Danish Modern”) that is admired all over the world. Remainder of the day at leisure. Radisson Collection Royal Hotel.

Day 9 Wednesday Copenhagen – Stockholm

Transfer to the airport for the flight to Stockholm. Upon arrival, embark on an explorations of Sweden’s grand and scenic capital. Built on fourteen Islands, Stockholm is amazingly situated where Lake Malaren merges with the Baltic Sea. Visit the world-class City Hall, famous for the Nobel Prize banquets that are celebrated each year (remember when Isaac Bashevis Singer made his speech in Yiddish?). Later, continue to the hilly area of southern Stockholm for an impressive panoramic view of the city. Enter the Old Town for a stroll through the quaint, narrow alleys and streets, and visit the Jewish Museum. From here, continue past the Royal Palace on the way to the hotel. Bank Hotel.

Day 10 Thursday Stockholm

A morning tour will begin at the outstanding Vasa Ship Museum, where the ill-fated 17th century vessel sunk on its maiden voyage – sadly, only a few hundred feet from the shipyard. Now, this luckless vessel functions as a beautifully preserved specimen of the days of fabled seafaring. En route back to the city, pass the former Olympic Stadium and the elegant residential area of Ostermalm. See Raoul Wallenberg Square, commemorating the Swedish hero who devoted his life to saving Jews during the Holocaust. Next, visit the Great Synagogue before arriving at the nearby hotel. Remainder of day at leisure. Bank Hotel.

Day 11 Friday Stockholm

Transfer to the airport. Say goodbye to Scandinavia, filled with warm memories of fjords, freedom, little mermaids and majestic vistas.
